As The Crow Flies [fledgling version] - #song
I inhaled it deeply, this strange relation
Story
This song originally came through way back in 1995, and in a very similar a capella style to the way it is shared in sacred circle today.
I was sitting with my guitar in my bedroom, a crow calls outside the window as I started playing a simple rhythm on the open E, words flowed out, more notes added, and the song quickly took form. I shared it with friends and always heard a full composition in my head. It had to wait about six years to be played on stage as the full bloodied Crow Circus tribal rock-funk song it became once the band got their instruments on it.
Interesting that I wrote a song about crows years before the band formed. Perhaps this is where the seed of the whole crow circus thang was planted? Regardless, I have always loved crows, their kin, and their medicine, and I love this song.
I have a beloved wooden shaker that is part of my muso and ceremony kit and this is how we first shared it in circle one evening – shaker and voices – and that is how this fledgling version was captured. I still have a full composition in my head, which has changed quite a bit over the thirty years this song has been in my life. I am so ready to create that version in the studio.
I open my eyes, this promise returned…
Music
This is an acoustic demo version we recorded last year; fledgling is the term for a baby crow at the age when it first leaves the nest and learns to fly. For anyone who has heard us play live in ceremony, this is how you may remember the song.
We are releasing this version as a promise and a placeholder for the finished piece that will be recorded as soon as we can.
Thank you so much for listening, I love you, Mark Graywolf xoxox
Lyrics
As The Crow Flies
A golden promise, in your back pocket
Riding away, like I’d forgotten
I keep my instinct, so close beside me
It takes me over, returns it promptly
As the crow flies
beneath this wisdom, there lies a colour
sickly sweet, yet fine the odour
I inhaled it deeply, this strange relation
It poisons swiftly, yet dying slowly
As the crow flies
Into the forest, I’m kissed so softly
I open my eyes
this promise returned
as the crow flies
