Down the River [fledgling version] - #song
Send all your disappointment
Down the river, the river down
Story
This piece is simple, languid, and serpentine, with the occasional deep undercurrent, some frothy rapids, and a breathtaking waterfall.
It does exactly what it says on the packaging—sends stuff down the river. If you are ready to release anything that no longer serves you, this song is custom built to draw it forth, rinse it all out, and wash it away.
The river has had quite a few interpretations over its 24 year lifespan, from twangy country stylings, to piano-based ambience, right through to a high powered funk/disco treatment (thanks Mincky and Tavis), which was always a fun way to close out a set.
However we dressed it up, or down, the essence remains the same, only you know, for your self, when you are holding onto something that has served its time and is ready to be released.
It’s less about what, and more about when…
Music
This is an acoustic demo version we recorded last year, fledgling is the term for a baby crow at the age when it first leaves the nest and learns to fly. For anyone who has heard us play live in ceremony, this is how you may remember the song.
We are releasing this version as a promise and a placeholder for the finished piece that is in the mixing process as I write this.
Thank you so much for listening, I love you, Mark Graywolf xoxox
Lyrics
Down the River
Damn, I left my hand in the fire, again
Flesh to flames, and smoke to ashes that burn
The bridge is burnt, in the process of crossing
I fall to the water, I sink, I float, I swim
The same expectations spiral, to the same outcomes
Cycles of choice, karma, and wheels that turn
There’s nothing so common, as the common ground we find in ourselves
Too deep to stand, too shallow to sit right down
Send all your disappointment
Down the river, the river down
Send all your disappointment
Down the river, the river down
Settling back into my chair I stoke the fire
It’s less about what, and more about when
It’s less about what, and more about when
Send all your disappointment
Down the river, the river down
Send all your disappointment
Down the river, the river down
Send it down
Send it down, down, down
River down
